The classic North Island v South Island clash has been officially revived according to Sky Sport's The Breakdown.

A staple of the New Zealand rugby calendar for decades, professional rugby has seen North v South become redundant.

But the COVID-19 pandemic has left gaps in the schedule and the unofficial All Blacks trial is back on.

The Breakdown reports the historic inter-Island fixture will be held at Auckland's Eden Park on August 29, with selection criteria based on what province a player made their first-class debut for.

All Blacks assistant coaches John Plumtree and Scott McLeod will mentor the north, with Greg Feek and Brad Mooar coaching the south.

Only two North v South games have been played since the integration of professional rugby in 1995.

Over the course of 80 matches, North has won 50 with South winning 27 and three draws.
