Rugby: Get Carter - West Melton's ploy to shut down an All Blacks great

For years, Dan Carter was a dominant force as an All Black, with opposing teams plotting in an often-fruitless attempt to shut him down.

As he makes a return for Southbridge rugby club on Saturday, opponents West Melton have gone outside the box to try to beat down the former Crusader.

Training at West Melton Domain was a little bit different this week.

Twenty-four-year-old builder Ashton Mulloy is the man tasked with marking one of the greatest first-fives of all time.

"He's definitely one of my favourite players," Mulloy admits.

Now on the verge of going up against his idol, it's only fair that Ashton gets familiar with the man he'll be marking on Saturday by hitting a tackle bag emblazoned with Carter's face.

His clubmates are sceptical, but confident he'll produce the goods.

"Ashton's got it all day, mate," says his captain. "He's the best 10 in Ellesmere."

Carter's lack of action doesn't stop West Melton acknowledging he's a serious threat.

The West Melton boys promise to pull no punches when they face up against when the real 'DC' fronts up on Saturday.
