Live updates: Blackcaps v West Indies Third T20 at Mt Maunganui

West Indies 25/1 (2.2 overs of 20)

Fletcher 4*, Mayers 5*, Fletcher 11, Ferguson 1/13

Match called off for rain, NZ win series 2-0

9:19pm - And that's the ball game. Captains Santner and Pollard have shaken hands, signifying that no play will be possible tonight.

A shame for Santner, whose captaincy debut won't count for anything. Still, he won the toss - that must count for something.

Thanks for joining us tonight. Join us on Thursday morning for the start of the first test between these two sides.

9:17pm - Umpires are discussing the situation with groundsmen and the outcome of that conversation is imminent.

8:56pm - NZ Cricket has announced that the latest we can wait for any kind of contest is 9:48pm for five overs each.

8:49pm - Groundsmen are starting to sweept the water off the covers out in the middle, so perhaps they're preparing for a restart. Stand by, we'll let you know as soon as there's a development.

8:21pm - Still no sign of action from the grounds staff at the Bay Oval. Covers are still over the wicket and if we do return to play, there will likely be a reduction in overs.

The minimum number of overs we can play, apparently, is five... and West Indies are about halfway there already.

7:49pm - Only light rain falling, but still no sign of the covers coming off. Stay tuned...

7:36pm - If you're just joining us, the weather at Mt Maunganui has packed up and rain has forced players off the field after just two overs.

Stand by for a resumption of play or news on any reduction in overs...

Third over - Hamish Bennett comes into the attack, he was expensive at Auckland.

His first ball is a bouncer, Mayers swings and misses.

Mayers wafts at the second ball without contact and the players wander off, as another shower passes over the ground.

Second over - Lockie Ferguson to bowl his first over and the first ball is nicked by King past Mitchell at slip for four.

OUT - Not so lucky this time, as King guides the ball to Neesham near the boundary for an early breakthrough.

King c Neesham, b Ferguson 11 (7)

Wow, Ferguson gets some inside swing that catches the inside edge of Fletcher's bat and runs off behind the wicket for four (WI 25/1).

First over - Santner to bowl and first ball drifts wide down leg side for three runs.

Fourth ball, King hits high over long-off onto the bank for six.

Windies off to a good start, with a couple of loose deliveries from Santner (WI 12/0).

7:04pm - Well, that was quick. Covers are off and the teams are taking the field.

Chasing teams don't have a great record here, but the weather conditions have driven Santner's decision and already we've seen that bear out.

6:59pm - And it's raining at the Bay Oval and covers are on the pitch. This could be the trend tonight, if we get any play at all.

Mt Maunganui is currently buried under a heavy layer of mist.

6:32pm - Rain is holding off at the Bay Oval, play is scheduled to start on time at 7pm.

Captain Mitch Santner has won the toss and will bowl first, with the prospect of some rain disruption and likelihood of delays later.

Southee, Taylor and Jamieson are out, Daryl Mitchell, Hamish Bennett and Scott Kuggeleijn take their places in the line-up.

NZ: Guptill, Seifert, Conway, Phillips, Mitchell, Neesham, Santner, Ferguson, Bennett, Kuggeleijn, Sodhi

West Indies: Fletcher, King, Walsh, Pooran, Powell, Pollard, Mayers, Allen, Shepherd, Cottrell, Thomas

6:17pm - The NZ side will pay their respects tonight to former national selector Ross Dykes, who has died today, aged 75.

Dykes, who represented Auckland as a wicketkeeper-batsmen for 10 years, served as selector for 13 years and then Otago Cricket chief executive for another 10, helping to secure University Oval as New Zealand's seventh test ground.

Kia ora, good evening and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the third and final T20 encounter between New Zealand and West Indies, played at Mt Maunganui's Bay Oval.

The Blackcaps have already wrapped up series honours with victories at Auckland and the Mount, but now have a chance to achieve a three-match whitewash over the reigning world champions in cricket's shortest format.

Remember, the home side entered this series with a seven-game losing streak, but have put that behind them in dominant fashion, squeaking home in the final over on Friday, but romping home by 72 runs last night.

In the second outing, Glenn Phillips carved a spot in cricketing folklore with his 108 runs off 51 balls, notching up New Zealand's fastest T20 century in the process.

Spin all-rounder Mitch Santner - who hit the winning runs at Eden Par - will captain the side tonight, with Tim Southee, Ross Taylor and Kyle Jamieson stepping aside to prepare for the first test, beginning Thursday.

Doug Bracewell, Mark Chapman and Scott Kuggeleijn have been added to the squad.

The weather forecast at the Mount looks dodgy, with occasional rain expected.
