Tennis: Michael Venus confirms he will play ATP World Tour Finals after COVID-19 voucher resolution

Michael Venus will play in next week's ATP World Tour Finals, after somewhat resolving a COVID-19 quarantine issue.

The 33-year-old Kiwi and doubles partner John Peers have earned spots for the final event of the season in London - his fourth straight appearance at the elite eight-team tournament.

But their spot was in doubt, with Venus holding a New Zealand quarantine voucher for next week, meaning he would have to skip the tournament and fly out Wednesday morning (NZ time).

Venus has made several attempts to have his isolation dates shifted beyond November 22, when his 2020 campaign ends. He even attempted to swap vouchers with other Kiwis, but Government officials back home would not allow that.

The earliest Venus could get home under official guidelines was the first week of January.

Venus feared his Olympic selection was at risk, with a loss of ranking points dropping from eighth to outside the top 20.

But when the Government made an extra 100 daily quarantine places available, the Aucklander snapped one up and secured a flight home on December 13, which will see him out of isolation just after Christmas.

Venus is still seeking an earlier date, but is committed to Peers and trying to win the World Tour Finals for the first time. Venus and South African partner Raven Klaasen lost last year's tournament final to Frenchmen Pierre-Hugue Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.

Venus faces three weeks in London after the tournament and will be unable to prepare for the Australian Open in January.

Instead, he may base himself in another European country, where he can train.
