Rugby: Ex-All Blacks prop Owen Franks poised for shock Super Rugby comeback

A busy week of recruitment has just got that much better for the Hurricanes.

After re-signing All Blacks veteran TJ Perenara, Newshub can reveal they've now secured the services of returning World Cup-winner Owen Franks.

The 108-test prop is poised to join the franchise on a one-year deal for the 2022 season.

Since his shock exclusion from Steve Hansen's 2019 All Blacks World Cup squad, Franks has played for the English Premiership's Northampton Saints, but Newshub understands the former Crusaders front-rower has been keen to move his family home.

Franks' signature is another boost for the Hurricanes, two days after welcoming back Perenara on a two-year deal and hot on the heels of Ngani Laumape's decision to join French Top-14 side Stade Francais.

The 33-year-old's experience at both test and Super Rugby level will be welcomed by the Wellngton-based side, which finished last in Super Rugby Aotearoa this year with just two wins.

The opportunity for Franks to mentor young All Blacks prop Tyrel Lomax is also seen as a major benefit to the move.

While Franks is no stranger to Super Rugby, he will have to adjust to a new environment in the capital, after spending all his decade-long Super Rugby career with the Crusaders.

Making his debut in 2009, Franks played 150 games for the Christchurch-based franchise, winning three Super Rugby titles.

The Hurricanes have chosen not to comment on Franks' move, but it's understood his unveiling in the capital is imminent.

The franchise has still yet to secure key All Blacks Ardie Savea and Jordie Barrett, who are both off contract at the end of the year.
