Football: Italy top England on penalties to claim Euro 2020 crown

Italy have claimed Euro 2020 in dramatic fashion,  winning on penalties 3-2, against England at London's Wembley Stadium.

Under the weight of a nation's expectation, England led for over an hour after Luke Shaw's second-minute goal sent Wembley into madness.

But the Italians dominated from that point, and finally had an equaliser through defender Leonardo Bonucci who stabbed home from close range after a sensational Jordan Pickford save in between the sticks for England.

It was a 90 minutes bare of goal-scoring chances, with the homeside happy to sit back on their lead, while the Italians sent wave after wave forward in an effort to level the scores.

Following Bonucci's goal, neither keeper was seriously tested in the regulation 90 minutes, as the match went into extra-time.

England manager Gareth Southgate brought on attacking-minded Jack Grealish who brought a cutting-edge to England's play and was at the centre of a controversial incident with 10 minutes to play.

The Aston Villa skipper was fouled by Italian midfielder Jorginho, who dived in studs up, making heavy contact with Grealish's leg.

Referee Bjorn Kuipers help up a yellow card, but replays suggested it should have been red.

It wasn't the only moment of controversy in the match - early in the second half of normal time, England forward Raheem Sterling appeared to be clipped inside the Italian box, but Kuipers waved play on.

England attacked with more vigour in extra-time, with the Italians comfortable in the odd counter-attack with a penalty shootout on the horizon.

And penalties it would be after a late scare for the hosts when Pickford saved a thunderous  Federico Bernardeschi free-kick from 25 yards.

Italy went first in the shootout, and Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi slotted home with confidence past Pickford.

England captain Harry Kane blasted his effort passed Italian stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma to level the scores, before Pickford swung the result in England's favour saving Andrea Belotti's low drive.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire powered home his effort as did Bonucci, but England still had the advantage,

Marcus Rashford entered the fray with seconds remaining in extra-time for his penalty-taking prowess, but his shot was well-saved by Donnarumma.

Bernadeschi went straight down the middle with his spot-kick to put Italy in front and Donnarumma's save from Jadon Sancho's strike had Italy on match point.

But Pickford kept his side in it with a super low save from Jorginho's take, leaving England needing a successfull attempt to level the scores.

But teenager Bukayo Sako's effort was saved by a confident Donnarumma and Italy celebrated their first major title since the 2006 Football World Cup.

For England, the wait goes on having not lifted a major men's football trophy since 1996.

Football is coming Rome.
