Rugby: All Blacks' Perth travel plans on hold, home tests against South Africa, Black Ferns v Australia cancelled

The All Blacks won't travel to Perth on Sunday, as New Zealand Rugby also confirmed that the two scheduled home tests against South Africa have been cancelled.

Perth had been pencilled in to host the Rugby Championship, with the All Blacks to be joined by South Africa and Argentina travelling into Western Australia.

The All Blacks were due to face the Wallabies in the third Bledisloe Cup test on August 28.

However, those plans have been scuppered by New Zealand's COVID-19 outbreak, as quarantine free travel to Australia has been suspended.

The situation would have meant the All Blacks would have been away from home until November, also due to travel to the northern hemisphere for the end of year tour.

Instead, the All Blacks will stay in New Zealand until the Rugby Championship's schedule is finalised, NZR says.

"Without complete certainty on the team's next movements around The Rugby Championship we felt it was prudent for the team to stay put in New Zealand until SANZAAR have announced the full tournament schedule," NZR chief executive Mark Robinson says.

"Once the team leaves our shores, they currently can't return until November 23 post their Northern Tour, so given the uncertainty, it makes sense to pause and get more clarity on these fixtures.

"We remain 100 percent committed to playing in the entire Fortinet Rugby Championship in 2021 and are working closely with SANZAAR to look at a range of options to reschedule these important matches."

SANZAAR, southern hemisphere rugby's governing body, will announce the plans for the Rugby Championship at a later date.

It was reported earlier though that the Rugby Championship could be held across Europe.

In a release on Friday, SANZAAR stated their displeasure at the All Blacks' decision not to travel, but adds that options are being explored to ensure that the Rugby Championship goes ahead.

"SANZAAR is very disappointed that the New Zealand Rugby Union has made the decision not to travel to Perth at this time to play Australia for its second-round match [and Third Bledisloe match]," it says.

"However, SANZAAR and the other national unions will continue to work on when and where this match can be played as part of the overall rescheduling work being done."

The All Blacks and Black Ferns' home tests, against South Africa and Australia respectively, have also been cancelled, with COVID restrictions meaning no rugby can be played.

The All Blacks were due to face South Africa at Forsyth Barr Stadium on September 25, and in Auckland on November 2.

The Black Ferns meanwhile were to face Australia in Christchurch on Sunday 26, and again in Auckland as part of a double-header with the All Blacks the following weekend.

"We share the disappointment of our fans, players and other stakeholders, particularly those in Dunedin where the sold-out 100th Test between the All Blacks and South Africa was shaping up as a very special occasion," Robinson says.

"However, after discussions with the Government, it is clear that the COVID-19 travel restrictions meant there was no way of bringing the South African and Wallaroos squads into New Zealand and we understand the importance of putting the health and safety of New Zealanders first."
