Rugby: All Blacks, Black Ferns Sevens sides to skip opening rounds of World Series due to managed isolation uncertainty

The All Blacks and Black Ferns Sevens sides will not contest the opening rounds of the IRB World Series, which kicks off at Dubai in November.

The 2022 schedule has been released by World Rugby, with confirmation of Hong Kong's return to the circuit next year, but the Sydney and Hamilton events have been scrapped, due to the logistical challenge of quarantine under COVID-19.

Instead, Spain has been added for the first time, with men's and women's tournaments scheduled at Malaga in January, while Toulouse in France will welcome teams in May.

NZ Rugby has confirmed the New Zealand sides will miss at least the first tournament of 2022, as it awaits the government's decisions on what managed isolation will continue to look like.

The series will have 10 men's and seven women's rounds over six months, with the Dubai leg played behind closed doors, starting November 26.

The men's series will have a North American round in Vancouver, February 26-27, and Los Angeles a week later, before moving to Asia, where Hong Kong will host a men's and women's event (April 1-3) after a gap of two years.

That will be followed by a men's event in Singapore (April 9-10).
