4:25pm

Good afternoon! We're about half an hour from the start of play on what could be the final day of the series, and the Blackcaps' 2021 altogether.

Henry Nicholls and Rachin Ravindra will resume at the start of play, but India can afford to be patient in their search for wickets, needing five strikes in two days to seal the series.

*****

Kia ora, good afternoon and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of day four of the second test between New Zealand and India from Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

A week after the miracle of Kanpur, the Blackcaps will need to pull off an even greater escape, if they're to avoid massive defeat here.

Despite the heroic performance of Ajaz Patel, who's 14/225 sets a new record for the best test bowling match figures against India, the Kiwis are facing a potentially record loss.

New Zealand still need exactly 400 runs for victory, with just five wickets in hand. India have two entire days to take those five wickets and seal a 1-0 series victory.

The Blackcaps' biggest defeat in terms of runs stands at 358 against South Africa in 2007, today could see them set an unwanted record.

Tom Latham, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Ross Taylor and Tom Blundell all fell on day three, leaving the lower order facing the mother of all salvage jobs today.

Henry Nicholls (36 not out) and Rachin Ravindra (two not out) are the overnight pair, and will resume their innings on day four, likely facing India's spin-heavy attack once again.

With seven wickets already in the match, India's Ravi Ashwin looms as the biggest threat, needing only three of the last five scalps to finish his 10-wicket match haul.

TAB odds: NZ $93, India $1.001, draw $93
