Cricket World Cup: White Ferns semi-final dream still barely alive, despite India's win over Bangladesh

Fear not, New Zealand's hopes of making the Cricket World Cup semi-finals on home turf are still alive - but they now rest with defending champions England coming unstuck over the next few days.

India's 110-run win over Bangladesh at Hamilton on Tuesday all but clinched their spot in the final four with three wins and a positive net run rate. They would need a massive loss to South Africa on Thursday to miss out now.

Australia are safely into the semis, South Africa only need to beat West Indies or India to secure their place, and India's run rate puts them in a strong position in any countback scenario.

With a win over Pakistan on Saturday and a West Indies loss to South Africa, the White Ferns can still supplant the Caribbean side, who carry a poor net run rate, after big losses to Australia and India.

The Kiwis' biggest threat now are the English, who lost their first three matches, but have regrouped to win three straight. The Ferns must hope they stumble against both the two lowest-ranked teams at the tournament - Pakistan and Bangladesh - a long shot indeed.

Of course, for any of this to mean anything, New Zealand must still overcome Pakistan, with consierable doubt over the fitness of captain and leading runscorer Sophie Devine, and leading wicket-taker Lea Tahuhu.

Devine left the field against England on Sunday with severe back strain, returned to complete her innings with the bat, but could not field. Fast-bowler Tahuhu could not finish her fifth over, after she re-aggravated a hamstring injury suffered in the build-up to the tournament.

Both are due for scans that will determine their availability for their final round-robin fixture and beyond.
