Super Rugby Pacific: Blues, Moana Pasifika gear up for rare return fixture days after first clash

The Blues will be without several frontline stars for their second clash with Moana Pasifika in five days as the All Blacks leave policy comes into play for the first time this season.

Rieko Ioane, Beauden Barrett and Hoskins Sotutu have all been given this weekend off but another All Black will be on the sidelines for longer - and his coaches are none too pleased about it.

It's been a lighter load for the Blues since Tuesday's clash with Moana Pasifika - with just five days before Saturday's repeat match.

"It's a whole club philosophy around getting the boys back to their best," explained forwards coach Tom Coventry.

"We'll do everything to make sure we get the boys back to their very best."

Rest will be the name of the game for many of the Blues front line players, with the implementation of the new All Blacks rest policy leaving more than one star player unavailable.

That policy is now controlled by the franchises rather than New Zealand Rugby

"It's more of an individual plan now," Coventry added. "The coaching staff of the franchises have a large say in how we'll best manage them through the course of the year."

It's a win win for the Blues, who wouldn't have played Barrett after his head knock against the Highlanders but can now use the weekend as his All Blacks rest.

Nepo Laulala will get plenty of rest over the coming weeks; suspended for three for his dangerous shot in Tuesday's win.

But the suspension has left his coaches far from impressed.

"He needs to do some work. We need to be better than that, we certainly don't train that way and he needs to do some work," Coventry said.

The task facing Moana Pasifika gets no easier but they're not daunted by the tight turn around, nor a first clash at Eden Park.

"These are young guys that are fresh," captain Sekope Kepu said. "Everyone is willing to take their opportunity and the ones they're getting, they're putting their hands up."

Moana Pasifika will be hopeful of an upset on Saturday, as several key All Blacks watch from the stands.
