Golf: Lydia Ko slips to third at LPGA's Palos Verdes Championship, best finish since COVID-19 recovery

Kiwi Lydia Ko has finished tied for third place at the LPGA Palos Verdes Championship in California, two shots behind winner Marina Alex.

Starting the day in second place, one shot behind leader Hannah Green, Ko carded a one-under final round of 70. Green carded one-over to finish fifth equal.

Ko needed an eagle on the final hole to force a playoff against Alex, but could only make par, as  the American won the title. The finish represents Ko's best result since catching COVID-19 earlier this year.

"A lot of my golf I thought was good," Ko said. "I think, over the last couple of days, I didn't drive it good.

"Considering where I put myself in some positions, it's not bad.

"This week, I stayed really patient out there. Even if I was out of position or over par for the day, I tried to not give up, and believed that I could make it up on the next hole or the holes coming.

"Overall, a lot of solid golf. I feel like almost two different people off the tee from the first few days to the last few days, but it's not easy out there and I know there's still a lot of good."

Ko, 25, also needed treatment on her back late in her round.

"It's that time of the month," she explained. "I know the ladies watching are probably like 'yeah, I got you'."

"When that happens, my back gets really tight and I'm all twisted."

Ko began her day in the worst possible fashion with a bogey on the opening hole, but bounced back with birdies on the third and fifth holes to be eight-under, where she'd stay through the front nine.

Another bogey on the 10th hole dropped Ko left her needing to finish strong to have any chance of catching Alex - the real star of the final day - who carded a five-under 66 to rocket up the leaderboard.

Her final round consisted of six birdies and a bogey to move into the outright lead after the 16th hole, overtaking South Korea's Jin Young Ko, who finished second at nine-under.

The 31-year-old's victory was just her second on the LPGA tour - her first since the 2018 Portland Classic.

Ko continues her LPGA campaign on May 12, when the tour heads to New Jersey for the Founder's Cup.
