Rugby World Cup: Seven debutants named, as new broom sweeps through Black Ferns squad

Auckland five-eighth Ruahei Demant has been appointed new captain of the Black Ferns for next month's Pacific Four series, as the new coaching structure takes stock before this year's Rugby World Cup.

After several weeks of off-field soul-searching - including a damning review of team culture, the resignation of World Cup-winning coach Glenn Moore and elevation of former All Blacks coach Wayne Smith as 'rugby director' - the changes have continued on the field field, with seven rookies named among the 31 players to face Australia, Canada and USA.

Gone are former captains Les Elder and Eloise Blackwell, along with veteran wing Renee Wickliffe. Also missing is hooker Te Kura Ngata-Aerengamate, whose social media outburst over her treatment on last year's northern tour sparked the independent review.

Instead, Demant, 27, will lead the team, after an international career marred by serious knee injuries.

"'Lu' has the trust from this group," said Smith. "She is a clear, specific communicator and we see this as a great opportunity to grow her leadership."

Smith makes it clear the missing veterans have not been totally discarded from World Cup consideration.

"These are players that have had a significant impact on the Black Ferns team for a long time. We want them to be in the best possible condition to be selected for Rugby World Cup.

"We've been looking at videos and doing a lot of education around what type of game we want to play. There is potentially a bit of an experimental tinge to it, but we know we have some catching up to do and now is the time to do it."

Four of the debutants - hooker Natalie Delamere, and props Angel Mulu, Lucy Anderson and Tanya Kalounivale - come in the front row, while Olympic sevens gold medallist Ruby Tui will transition to 15s for the first time.
