Super Rugby Pacific: Blues banking on Eden Park advantage as playoffs football approaches

As Super Rugby Pacific nears its pointy end, the Blues want to have a huge say on how the competition finishes - and they want to do so at their home fortress.

Friday's 71-28 victory over Melbourne Rebels at Eden Park sees the Blues open up a six-point lead over Australia's Brumbies at the top of the table, albeit having played one game more than their closest competition.

And with three round robin games left to play this season, the Blues are doing everything in their power to ensure they'll still be in first position heading into finals football.

Top spot will ensure the Blues continue to enjoy their home comforts of Eden Park, where they haven't tasted defeat since going down 27-43 to the Crusaders in March last year.

Should the Blues finish the round robin in first position, they would have the advantage of playing their quarter-final, and any prospective semi-final and even the final itself in front of their home fans.

But with their next two matches against the Reds, the reigning Super Rugby Australia champions, and the Brumbies, coach Leon MacDonald knows the importance of continuing to produce performances like Friday's to give them every possible advantage in the race to claim this year's title.

"The next little while is critical, it's going to dictate where we finish on the table," MacDonald said.

"We love playing at Eden Park, we've played well here over the last few years, we've been hard to beat here. The Crusaders are the only team that's beaten us here for a little while.

"To give us every opportunity to have a run home makes a big difference.

"Also, to have a bit of pride in defending our record here - that's really important."

But with the confidence of Friday's demolition job against the Rebels now flowing through the Blues, captain Dalton Papalii adds his side have full understanding of what they have to do in order to add to last year's Super Rugby Trans-Tasman trophy.

"We don't need to change anything, we know the process," Papalii said.

"Talking to [Luke] Romano, [with] all that experience, and he said these are the times you don't back off, you just keep ramping it up, keep pushing that little bit extra.

"I think the boys will keep doing that. We've got a taste of how good we can be, and that sort of gives us drive that we've just gotta keep pushing."

Next Saturday's clash against the Reds will be the Blues' last at Eden Park in Super Rugby Pacific's round robin stage, before travelling to face the Brumbies in Canberra, and the Waratahs in Sydney.
