*****

Kia ora, good evening and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of State of Origin I between New South Wales and Queensland at Sydney's Accor Stadium.

Last year, COVID-19 meant the three-match series was played entirely north of the border, but that made little difference to the Blues, who inflicted a 50-6 hammering in Game One at Townsville and held their rivals scoreless (26-0) in Game Two at Brisbane.

The Maroons reclaimed some credibility with a narrow 20-18 win in the third encounter at Gold Coast, but their period of domination through the 2000s and 2010s was well and truly over.

They've responded by appointing Queensland legend Billy Slater as coach, hoping his passion and mana can restore them to their glory days.

He's named four debutants in his gameday squad, with Brisbane winger Selwyn Cobbo and North Queensland lock Reuben Cotter in the starting line-up, and Broncos forward Patrick Carrigan and Cowboys forward Jeremiah Nanai coming off the bench.

NZ Warriors fullback Reece Walsh, who suffered a hamstring injury on the verge of a rookie debut last year, could not force his way into a full-strength squad this time.

NSW coach Brad Fittler has selected three first-timers, with Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs in the starting line-up, and Penrith back Stephen Crichton and Parramatta forward Ryan Matterson on the interchange.

Interchange: 14-Stephen Crichton, 15-Liam Martin, 16-Reagan Campbell-Gillard, 17-Ryan Matterson

Queensland: 1-Kalyn Ponga, 2-Selwyn Cobbo, 3-Valentine Holmes, 4-Dane Gagai, 5-Xavier Coates, 6-Cameron Munster, 7-Daly Cherry-Evans, 8-Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, 9-Ben Hunt, 10-Josh Papalii, 11-Kurt Capewell, 12-Felise Kaufusi, 13-Reuben Cotter
