Hockey: Black Sticks women fall to Germany, slip to defeat in World Cup quarter-final

The Black Sticks women have been bundled out of the Hockey World Cup, falling 1-0 to Germany in the quarter-finals at Amsterdam.

After a scoreless opening quarter that saw them survive two chances from German penalty corners, New Zealand's resistance was ended to start the second spell.

A green card to Alia Jaques opened the door for Germany, as Lena Micheel opened the scoring after 16 minutes.

Goalkeeper Brooke Roberts kept the Black Sticks in the contest, as both sides went into halftime with no change to Germany's 1-0 advantage.

After the break, Olivia Merry was denied from a penalty corner, as a last-gasp deflection saw her effort go wide of the German goal.

A yellow card to Benedetta Wenzel in the third quarter encouraged the Black Sticks to attack, but the German defence were resolute to keep their lead intact heading into the final spell.

Germany goalkeeper Nathalie Kubalski was on hand to deny Merry in the fourth quarter, as the Black Sticks continued to search for an equaliser.

Even removing the goalkeeper in the final quarter couldn't result in a levelling score, as time ran out on New Zealand's hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

The Kiwi women will have to pick themselves up quickly after their World Cup exit, with their next assignment - the Birmingham Commonwealth Games - later this month.

New Zealand are drawn in the same pool as Australia, South Africa, Scotland and Kenya, needing a top-two finish to reach the semi-finals.
