Bledisloe Cup: Wallabies insist Darcy Swain hit not intentional, despite ending Quinn Tupaea's season

The Wallabies are ensuring underfire lock Darcy Swain is supported, as he waits to learn his fate for a season-ending hit on All Blacks midfielder Quinn Tupaea.

In New Zealand's 39-37 victory at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium, Tupaea was taken from the field by doctors, after his planted leg was taken out by Swain in a tackle that was fortunate - for Australia - to only result in a yellow card.

Swain has since been cited for the hit and will face Sanzaar's judiciary on Monday night. Tupaea has been ruled out for the rest of 2022, suffering a ruptured medial collateral ligament and partial tear to his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The incident isn't Swain's first brush with disciplinary action, after he was handed a red card and two-week suspension earlier this year for headbutting England's Jonny Hill in Perth.

Wallabies teammate Allan Alalaatoa says the 25-year-old is "devastated" for the incident and is remorseful for the injury sustained by Tupaea.

"Seeing him after the game, he was devastated," said Alalaatoa. "He was more devastated for Quinn.

"There was no intention there for him to injure him the way that he did. As players, I've seen some of his close mates throw their arm around him.

"He's copping a fair bit on social media at the moment. We just want to make sure that, mentally, he's doing alright, but I can tell that he was definitely devastated for Quinn and what happened there."

The All Blacks saw the incident differently. Beauden Barrett took aim at Swain's hit, labelling Tupaea as a "sitting duck" for the taking.

Halfback Aaron Smith made his feelings perfectly clear.

"Seeing Quinn like that on Friday was pretty tough," Smith said. "You always feel for the brothers.

"Injuries happen in rugby, but some can be controlled."

If Swain is found guilty by the SANZAAR judiciary, he would almost certainly be ruled out of this weekend's second Bledisloe Cup test, with the All Blacks hosting the Wallabies at Eden Park on Saturday.
