Golf: Kiwis Ryan Fox, Lydia Ko move into title contention after sizzling third rounds

Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has shot up to second place with a round to play at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland on Sunday (NZ time).

The Aucklander fired a sparkling seven-under 65 to record the equal second-best score of the day at the Kingsbarn course, advancing from 10th place into genuine title contention at the DP World Tour event.

The world No. 46 reeled off a total of six birdies during his round - including a stretch of four in five holes - with his only stumble a bogey at the 15th.

Now 11-under overall for the tournament, Fox sits in a three-way tie for second place with Swede Alex Noren and Englishman Daniel Gavins - four shots behind leader, Brit Richard Mansell.

The 35-year-old made a fast start to 2022 but has struggled more recently, missing the cut at the two events either side of his withdrawal from last month's European PGA Championship due to injury.

Meanwhile, compatriot Lydia Ko put on a show of her own to also rocket up to second place at the Volunteers of America Classic in Texas.

Starting the day at eighth, Ko shot a four-under 67 to sit tied for second place, just one stroke behind joint leaders Lin Xiyu of China and Englishwoman Charley Hull.

The world No. 5 carded six birdies though her penultimate round, with her only blemish a double bogey at the 11th hole.

Ko will have a chance to record her second LPGA title of the year in Monday's final round.
