Motorsport: Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen treasures belated Bathurst 1000 celebration with dad Robert

Two years on from his first epic Bathurst 1000 victory, Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen is savouring another win at Mount Panorama - but this time with dad Robert.

Van Gisbergen and co-driver Garth Tander became the final duo to win behind the wheel of a Holden in its last year as a Supercars manufacturer.

The Kiwi made the most of the monumental occasion, clinching race victory, and extending his lead atop the championship standings in front of his family and fans.

Robert van Gisbergern couldn't be there for his first Bathurst win in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, but Shane reveals Sunday's win was one to cherish, not only for his family, but for the supporters at Mount Panorama.

"It still hasn't sunk in," he said. "It's pretty fresh, but it was an epic day.

"It's another farewell to Holden, but to also have the fans here and share it with them. This week, I learnt a lot about how much the brand means to people, to represent them like we do and the privilege to add to the tally of Holden wins.

"It's hard to put into words, but it's pretty cool. I would've liked to, but maybe if we go good at Gold Coast and wrap it up - it's a pretty cool place to have a party too.

"He's [Robert] finally able to come over to races again and I've loved being at racing with him this year, mainly with Rally and I think he came to Townsville, now this one.

"It's great to have him at races and see how much it meant to him as well. It's a real shame he missed out on my first, but that one's pretty cool.

Van Gisbergen and Tanner held off runners-up Chaz Mostert and Kiwi co-driver Fabian Coulthard, with polesitter Cam Waters finishing third.

Van Gisbergen admits his hard-fought win over Waters in 2020 was more challenging than Sunday's victory over Mostert.

"Probably 2020 was tougher mentally for a longer period of time, with Cam on me for those 60 laps, whatever it was.

"I knew once Chaz got past Brodie [Kostecki], if he did, that's when the pressure was going to come.

"The first two stints, in that last one, I kept myself pretty fresh and then pushed for a little bit - 5-6 laps, once the safety car tyres came up.

"When I sort of gapped him [Mostert] a bit, I knew I was okay. Of course, it wasn't easy, but I felt like I had him covered, where Cam probably put more constant pressure on me."
