Rugby: All Blacks avoid historic defeat with come-from-behind win over Scotland at Murrayfield

The All Blacks have avoided another historic defeat, with a come-from-behind victory over Scotland at Murrayfield.

New Zealand trailed for much of the test match, until their substitutes spurred them on to a 31-23 win against a brave Scottish outfit.

Debutant winger Mark Telea scored two tries, with the All Blacks bench proving the difference between the two sides.

Scotland had never beaten New Zealand in their 31 previous fixtures and early on, that trend looked likely to continue.

The All Blacks showed their attacking intent in the opening minutes, turning down a penalty goal just outside the Scotland 22m, following a break from Telea.

Hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho connected with his jumper, before going to the back of the New Zealand maul and charging his way over for the match's first try.

Loose forwards Dalton Papali'i and Ardie Savea troubled the Scottish breakdown, forcing back-to-back turnovers to win the ball back.

A grubber from Beauden Barrett put Caleb Clarke in space, before Jordie Barrett found an unmarked Telea on his wing with a crossfield kick to put the winger in for his first try in black.

After a frantic opening 10 minutes that left the Murrayfield faithful stunned, they quickly found their voice through back-to-back Scottish tries.

Scotland were awarded a penalty try, after Anton Lienert-Brown stopped a probable score by tackling Stuart Hogg off the ball, with the centre also receiving a yellow card.

Just moments later, centre Darcy Graham intercepted a David Havili pass intended for Beauden Barrett, beating two defenders and running in for another try.

With momentum well and truly swinging in Scotland's favour, the All Blacks found reprieve through their counter-ruck, with their entire back-row winning key turnovers.

Scotland completed the turnaround with the go-ahead score in the 30th minute with a penalty goal through the boot of first-five Finn Russell.

Ill-discipline proved costly for the All Blacks, who conceded eight penalties in the first-half at both the lineout and in the scrum.

On the verge of scoring a much-needed try, the All Blacks found themselves defending their own line after another indiscretion, but as he had done the entire opening 40 minutes, Savea won a crucial penalty turnover at the breakdown to keep Scotland's lead to just 17-14 at the break.

Scotland wouldn't need to wait long to extend their lead in the second half, with Lienert-Brown penalised again and Russell converting the shot at goal.

A Ioane penalty at the breakdown gave Scotland the perfect platform to launch an attack and looked poised to score, but Lienert-Brown won a crucial turnover at the ruck on the tryline.

Stampeding Scotland winger Duhan van der Merwe peppered the All Blacks defence with strong carries, with the visitors visibly frazzled with and without the ball.

The introduction of replacement props George Bower and Fletcher Newell offered little resistance, with the former penalised at the scrum, allowing Russell to extend the lead even further.

If there was a bright spot for the All Blacks on attack, it came in the form of Telea, with the elusive winger proving a handful down his right wing.

Replacement hooker Codie Taylor forced a turnover, as Scotland looked to drive their maul from inside their own 22m.

The resulting scrum saw Scotland penalised, which allowed Jordie Barrett to halt the momentum with a penalty goal.

From that, New Zealand looked to have pulled the test match back in their favour, with Australian-born Scottish loose forward Jack Dempsey yellow-carded for a deliberate knock on.

With an attacking scrum just five metres out, Scott Barrett picked up the ball from the base of the ruck and crashed over for the try, and the New Zealand lead.

Bower overturned his earlier indiscretion at the scrum, with a dominant shove to win the penalty and set up another All Blacks attacking lineout.

Any potential of a Scottish upset was ended, with Telea scoring his second try in the corner, after substitute Rieko Ioane committed two defenders to free up his winger.

All Blacks 31 (Taukei'aho, Scott Barrett, Telea 2 tries; Jordie Barrett 3 conversions & penalty) Scotland 23 (Penalty try, Graham try; Russell conversion & 3 penalties)
