Rugby: All Blacks XV overwhelm Ireland A to restore some pride after home series defeat

The All Blacks XV have achieved a small measure of payback on Irish rugby, overwhelming Ireland A 47-19 at Dublin.

Flying winger Shaun Stevenson scored two first-half tries to spark the rout, with Chiefs teammate Damian McKenzie pulling the strings expertly from first-five.

The result - effectively featuring a third-string NZ line-up - showed the depth on call for the All Blacks, while avenging the historic series defeat to Ireland at home this year.

Stevenson wasn't even wanted in the original tour selection and only joined the roster, when injury and illness depleted the top national squad for their northern hemisphere campaign.

But he quickly showed his class, fielding a crossfield kick from McKenzie and swerging inside the final defender to open the scoring in the 11th minute.

Hooker Brodie McAlister stretched the early advantage with a patented lineout-maul effort, before McKenzie and Stevenson combined for the try of the night.

Ireland overthrew an attacking lineout near the NZ goal-line and McKenzie pounced on the bouncing ball, breaking upfield, before finding Roger Tuivasa-Sheck on his shoulder.

The rugby league convert fired a backhanded speculator, gathered by Blues teammate Patrick Tuipulotu, McKenzie popped up again, before Ruben Love sent Stevenson away for his second.

New Zealand's momentum was halted, when flanker Luke Jacobson was yellow-carded for a late cleanout at a ruck, enabling Ireland to open their account with a try to first-five Ciaran Frawley.

Restored to full strength, the All Blacks XV struck from the second-half restart, with Stevenson carving up the defence, before halfback TJ Perenara provided the final pass for Hurricanes teammate Love.

After missing Super Rugby on a Japanese sabbatical, McKenzie has been bypassed for full All Blacks selection this year, but featured in a couple more tries, grabbing one for himself, as the visitors neared a half-century of points, while Ireland crossed for late consolation tries to salvage some respect.

"We know from previous campaigns in Ireland that they perform well, especially when they came to New Zealand and beat us," said NZ captain Tuipulotu. "We knew coming here today would be a challenge.

"We're quite a new, young team and we stood up to that challenge. We're very happy with how we performed and especially the new All Blacks V caps."

Next weekend, coach Leon McDonald will steer his team against a Barbarians outfit under the guidance of Crusaders rival Scott Robertson at London.
