Motorsport: Kiwi Marcus Armstrong joins IndyCar's Chip Ganassi Racing for 2023 season

Marcus Armstrong has become the latest New Zealander to move to the American IndyCar championship, signing for Chip Ganassi Racing for 2023.

Armstrong, 22, joins IndyCar after a stint in Formula Two, driving for French outfit DAMS in 2021, and British team Hitech Grand Prix in 2022.

In his two years in Formula Two, Armstrong won four races, three of which came in 2022, and a further eight podium finishes.

After the exit of NASCAR great Jimmie Johnson, Armstrong has been backed to make the switch from Formula Two, and will take the No.11 car for Chip Ganassi, alongside fellow Kiwi and six-time champion, Scott Dixon.

Armstrong will race for Chip Ganassi on road and street courses next season, with the team's oval race driver for the No.11 car to be confirmed at a later date.

Earlier this year, Armstrong tested for Dale Coyne Racing at Sebring, but has instead joined serial title winners Chip Ganassi for 2023.

"I'm ecstatic to be a part of the IndyCar Series, but especially with Chip Ganassi Racing because it is such an iconic and successful team," Armstrong said.

"I have an extraordinary opportunity in front of me to learn from people that have been performing at the absolute highest level in this sport.

"As a Kiwi, I've always watched Scott Dixon succeed in the championship with this team, so on a personal level this is quite special for me.

"I am a hard worker that looks to improve every single day. With the knowledge and personnel that this team has, I'm very excited to take on this new challenge."

Aside from Dixon, Armstrong also joins compatriot Scott McLaughlin in IndyCar, after he switched from Australia's Supercars championship in 2021.
