Amid accusations of a toxic culture within its ranks, the Wales Rugby Union has banned singing of Sir Tom Jones' classic 'Delilah' by choirs at Principality Stadium.

The 1968 banger describes a jilted lover murdering his ex-girlfriend with a knife and waiting for the police to arrest him, and has been off halftime entertainment and music playlists at the home of Welsh rugby since 2015.

The lyrics include: "I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more."

That veto now extends to guest choirs performing during games.

"The WRU condemns domestic violence of any kind," it said. "We have previously sought advice from subject matter experts on the issue of censoring the song, and we are respectfully aware that it is problematic and upsetting to some supporters, because of its subject matter."

Sir Tom Jones is a national icon in Wales, taking the song to No.2 in the UK charts and making it a favourite of sporting crowds from that country, so the ban is bound to cause outrage among fans.

Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit tweets: "All the things they need to do and they do that first..."

The announcement comes as the WRU submits plans to include at least five women on its 12-person board, along either a female chief executive or board chair, after accusations of sexism and misogyny from former female employees forced the resignation of CEO Steve Phillips.

"The onus is on us to explain to members the benefits of the proposals we are making, and we will do so, but I also think members will understand the necessity of what we are trying to achieve," said WRU chair Ieuan Evans.

"We are asking members to allow us to make significant changes to our constitution, which they won't do lightly and rightly so, but we must also be wholly transparent about the scale of change necessary to ensure the survival of Welsh rugby."

'Delilah' lyrics

I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window
I saw the flickering shadows of love on her blind
She was my woman
As she deceived me, I watched and went out of my mind

My, my, my, Delilah
Why, why, why, Delilah
I could see, that girl was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no man could free

At break of day when that man drove away, I was waiting
I crossed the street to her house and she opened the door
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more

My, my, my, Delilah
Why, why, why, Delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me Delilah, I just couldn't take anymore

She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more

My, my, my, Delilah
Why, why, why, Delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me, Delilah, I just couldn't take anymore
Forgive me, Delilah, I just couldn't take anymore
