Super Rugby Pacific: Beauden Barrett costs Blues certain try with brain explosion against Chiefs

Blues first-five Beauden Barrett has produced a strong contender for bombed try of the season during his team's loss to the Chiefs on Saturday.

With the Blues fighting their way back into the contest at a soggy FMG Stadium in Hamilton, the All Blacks star cost his team a certain five points when instead of placing the ball, he attempted to run it closer to the posts, only to put a foot on the dead-ball line in the process.

Moments earlier, Barrett had shanked a straightforward conversion which was clearly still on his mind, as he tried to give himself a more comfortable shot for his conversion once he had breached the tryline.

But All Blacks teammate Tupou Vaa'i never gave up the chase, diving with a brilliant desperation ankle tap that skewed Barrett's left foot into touch.

The try was awarded by referee Angus Gardner but Barrett's reaction indicated he realised it would soon be erased, and the TMO stepped in to do exactly that.

Fortunately for Barrett, Caleb Clarke bulldozed over the line a few minutes later to ensure the side weren't too badly hurt by his first-five's brain fade.

Barrett misstruck the ensuing conversion to add another blemish to a night to forget for the two-time World Rugby player of the year, as the Chiefs held on for a dramatic 20-13 win.
