Super Rugby Pacific: Ardie Savea hat-trick guides Hurricanes to bounceback win over Moana Pasifika

The Hurricanes have bounced back from last week's shock Super Rugby loss to Fijian Drua with a high-scoring win over Moana Pasifika.

Captain Ardie Savea grabbed a hat-trick, while Kini Naholo scored a first-half double as the hosts ran in 11 tries to clinch a 71-22 victory at Wellington's Sky Stadium.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring after just the opening minute, with centre Billy Proctor bumping off several tacklers on his way to the try-line.

But after back-to-back penalties, the visitors hit back just moments later, with captain Henry Taefu touching down after pouncing on an offload.

A turnover saw the Hurricanes go in front again, with fullback Harry Godfrey attacking an out-of-sorts Moana Pasifika defence, before sending Jordie Barrett over for the try.

After less than 15 minutes in, the hosts had their third try, with first-five Aiden Morgan squeezing through several defenders to crash over.

The Hurricanes brought up their bonus-point try inside the opening quarter, with Naholo doing just enough to find the white line from close range.

While Moana Pasifika's defence struggled, their attack had much more success, with Anzelo Tuitavuki punishing the Hurricanes for their ill discipline.

But an inexcusable mistake from the very next kickoff saw Naholo stroll in for the easiest of tries after a clever set-piece move from the scrum.

Moana Pasifika refused to go away however, with centre Danny Toala scoring right before halftime to reduce the Hurricanes' lead to 29-19 at the break.

A Lincoln McClutchie penalty right after halftime meant the deficit was just a converted try, only for Savea to muscle his way over for a five-pointer right after.

That would set the tone for the rest of the second half, with Moana Pasifika unable to trouble the scoreboard any further, as the Hurricanes ran riot.

Hooker Jacob Devery made the most of his first Super Rugby start with a pick-and-go from close range to add another five-pointer to his team's tally.

A desperate lunge for the tryline by Aidan Morgan saw Salesi Rayasi score, after the first-five was pushed back in-field but managed to get the offload away.

Rayasi then played the part of distributor in the Hurricanes' next score, with a back-handed offload sending replacement Caleb Delany over for the try.

A trademark dummy from Savea saw the skipper cross for his second try and his team's 10th overall.

Just minutes later, the influential back-rower would have his hat-trick, after brushing off one tackler to dive over in the corner to seal a commanding win.
