Rugby Championship: Emoni Narawa given pass mark by All Blacks captain Sam Cane after outstanding test debut

Of all those to enjoy Emoni Narawa's try-scoring All Blacks test debut, none had a better seat than captain Sam Cane - his teammate for club and now country.

Narawa, 23, was the All Blacks' sole debutant in Sunday's 41-12 Rugby Championship opening win over Argentina.

And after an outstanding season for the Chiefs to earn his way into Ian Foster's All Blacks squad, Narawa picked up where he left off in Super Rugby to score the final try in Mendoza.

Aside from his try, Narawa also made seven runs for 79 metres, and was heavily involved in setting up Dane Coles' opener, as well as making 11 tackles - second only to man-of-the-match Jordie Barrett among the backs.

In fact, Narawa's defensive efforts in particular were level with Cane and Shannon Frizell, all three registering 11 tackles - albeit two of them starting in the loose forwards.

For captain Cane, who has been front and centre to witness Narawa's form in 2023, Sunday's efforts were another string in the bow of a player who is continuing to grow.

"Every All Black when asked for a highlight of their career, they always look back and say their debut," said Cane. "It was the realisation of a dream, a really special occasion.

"For Emoni to do it over here in what was a pretty good win, and then cap it off with a try at the end there, he should be really proud of his performance."

Post-match, Narawa was also given the honour of collecting the All Blacks' trophy.

While unusual for a player fresh from his debut to be given silverware on behalf of his new teammates, Cane explains the All Blacks have made a habit out of letting the newbies hog the limelight.

"It's a bit of a tradition that's come about," he explained. "It's a team sport, no one really wants to be the one holding the trophy and showing it off, so we give it to the new guy.

"Hopefully it makes them feel like they've done an outstanding job, contributed to the win, and they're right in there and part of the team."

Narawa's efforts will see him contend to keep his spot when the All Blacks return to New Zealand this week to face arch-rivals South Africa at Go Media Stadium Mt Smart.

Narawa could be forced to contend with the likes of Will Jordan and Mark Telea for the No.14 jersey or switch flanks to the left and battle Caleb Clarke for No.11.
