Rugby World Cup: Springboks captain Eben Etzebeth in doubt for All Blacks clash after father dies

Springboks captain Eben Etzebeth is in doubt for Saturday's Rugby Championship contest against the All Blacks at Go Media Stadium Mt Smart, after his father passed away.

Etzebeth was named to make his return from a shoulder injury to lead South Africa, but may travel back home after father Harry died in Cape Town, after battling a long-time illness.

South African rugby writer Hendrik Cronje has revealed the tragic news on social media and also confirms Etzebeth's availability will be a decision made by him.

A longtime friend of Etzebeth's father has paid tribute on Facebook.

"My old wrestling opponent & father of Springbok rugby captain, Harry Etzebeth, passed away last night (Tuesday). RIP," Gerhard Ras wrote.

Springboks coach Jacques Nienaber announced his team to play the All Blacks on Tuesday,  with Etzebeth named stand-in skipper.

He was selected alongside Lood de Jager in the second row, but should he be ruled out, RG Snyman may start in his place.

The All Blacks will name their side to play South Africa on Thursday.
