Rugby World Cup: Shaun Stevenson, Samipeni Finau, Dallas McLeod named for All Blacks' home finale against Wallabies

Coach Ian Foster has named three debutants - two starting and one on the bench - for Saturday's home season finale against Australia at Dunedin.

With both the Bledisloe Cup retained and the Rugby Championship won with victory over Australia last weekend, Foster has been afforded the luxury of rotating his line-up for the final home test of 2023.

With the Rugby World Cup squad to be named on Monday, Foster and his selectors have one last chance to look at players that could play their way onto the plane to France.

Winger Shaun Stevenson and flanker Samipeni Finau will make their first starts, while utility back Dallas McLeod has been named on the bench.

Stevenson, 26, was a standout for the Chiefs in Super Rugby Pacific - albeit at fullback - but slots in on the right wing as part of a newlook back three.

In an anticipated move, Will Jordan will wear No.15, with Beauden Barrett rested, after starting in the All Blacks' three test wins so far this year.

Stevenson's Chiefs teammate, Finau, 24, also starts on test debut, forming a loose forward trio with captain Sam Cane, who returns from a neck injury, and Ardie Savea.

On the bench, McLeod will cover both midfield - where Anton Lienert-Brown and Braydon Ennor start together - and the wing, which sees Crusaders teammate Leicester Fainga'anuku selected for the first time this season.

Prop Tamaiti Williams makes his first test start, after debuting in last month's win over South Africa.

Fellow front-rower Fletcher Newell has been named on the bench, making his first test appearance of the year since suffering an injury in the Crusaders' Super Rugby season-opener.

The dead Bledisloe Cup fixture also offers the chance for several senior All Blacks to bid goodbye to New Zealand, after signing deals to play overseas next year.

Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick form a starting second row, before moving to France and Japan in 2024 respectively. Nepo Laulala starts at No.3, before he relocates to France next season as well.

On the bench, Japan-bound halfback Aaron Smith is given the chance to farewell his Highlanders home fans, along with Richie Mo'unga.

Hooker Dane Coles can do the same, before he retires at the end of the year.

Even with nothing on the line, Foster doesn't expect his side to ease up on a Wallabies side under pressure.

"Despite having won both the Rugby Championship and the Bledisloe Cup last week, this test is special for us, as we finish this stage of our preparation for later in the year," he said.

"It is our last chance to play in front of our fans and, even with some changes, it is a big opportunity for us to take another step forward as a team. We can't wait."

The encounter is the All Blacks' penultimate test before the Rugby World Cup, with a warm-up against South Africa at Twickenham on August 26 to be played, before the tournament begins.
