Rugby: Whitney Hansen hopes Matatū coaching appointment for Super Rugby Aupiki paves way to higher honours

One of the country's top rugby brains will take up her first head coaching role next season, with Whitney Hansen announced to lead the Matatū in their Super Rugby Aupiki title defence.

Like father Sir Steve. Whitney has already tasted World Cup success, assisting the Black Ferns to last year's title. Now she hopes to help pave the pathway for future Black Ferns to play and for herself to coach at the very top level.

Hansen isn't short of competitiveness, when it comes to coaching - she wants to be the very best.

Luckily, she has genes on her side.

"I think that's definitely a genetic trait that's been passed on," she said. "I try not to show how much I carry that, but I definitly am incredibly competitive."

That was on full display when she helped guide the Black Ferns to World Cup success last year. Players are well aware of her influence.

"Well, she's a legend of the game," says Chelsea Bremner. "You know the things that she's done for women's rugby and the growth that she's continuing to put into women's sport."

After the departure of Wayne Smith, Hansen elected not to put her name forward for the Black Ferns head role. Instead, she'll gain head coach experience with the Matatū.

"For me, even though they're the national team, I'll always have a drive to be world leading," she said. "We'll take some of their stuff, we'll copy, we'll edit, we'll paste and we'll try to go more."

That attitude to the game has her employers believing Hansen is one day destined for big things.

"She's smart, she's got real high standards... and not quite as grumpy as her dad," joked Matatū chief executive Colin Mainsbridge. "Good coach and loves the technical side of the game as well."

If the she can lead the Matatū to more success, another Hansen may soon guide a national team.
