Rugby: Ardie Savea takes top prize at New Zealand Rugby Awards after stellar All Blacks season

All Blacks No.8 Ardie Savea has capped off an incredible 2023 with another award, taking out the top prize at the NZ Rugby Awards.

Savea, 30, won the Kelvin R Tremain Memorial Player of the Year award, beating out competition from Aaron Smith, and Scott and Jordie Barrett.

The accolade comes on top of his World Rugby Player of the Year award in November and is the second time he has been named New Zealand's best player.

Liana Mikaele-Tu'u was named Black Ferns Player of the Year, as the world champions took another step on their journey as fulltime professionals.

Taranaki's Neil Barnes was named as Coach of the Year for his side's NPC campaign, beating out incoming All Blacks coach Scott Robertson, who won Super Rugby for the seventh successive year.

Black Ferns Sevens boss Corey Sweeney was named National Coach of the Year for his side's world series success, building towards neat year's Paris Olympics. Stacey Waaka and Akuila Rokolisoa took out the awards for Black Ferns Sevens and All Blacks Sevens Players of the Year.

Scott Barrett and Lucy Jenkins were named Super Rugby Players of the Year for their respective campaigns with the Crusaders and Matatū, as part of a Canterbury double sweep.

In his final All Blacks season, Smith received the Tom French Memorial Award for Māori Player of the Year.

"Congratulations to all the winners and nominees this year," said NZ Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson. "We've had another amazing year of rugby, with inspiring performances and contributions at all levels of the game.

"Our sevens teams really led the charge with exceptional performances, while Ardie Savea continues to set a high standard in every team he represents and is a worthy recipient of the Kel Tremain Award.

"It's heartening to hear the stories of some of our game's unsung heroes and we are really proud to have the introduction of new awards in this area in 2023."
