Unicode Consortium update to deliver pregnant man emoji

  • 19/09/2021

A list of newly approved emojis have been released - one being a pregnant man as part of efforts to be more gender inclusive.

Emojipedia says the 'pregnant man' and 'pregnant person' emojis will join the pregnant woman emoji, which was released in 2016.

"Released this week by the Unicode Consortium as part of Emoji 14.0, the new pregnancy options may be used for representation by trans men, non-binary people, or women with short hair-though, of course, use of these emojis is not limited to these groups," Emojipedia said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Among the potential uses of pregnant man and pregnant person is also a tongue-in-cheek way to display a food baby, a very full stomach caused by eating a large meal.

"As new human emojis have been released, Unicode has made an effort to be inclusive with gender, especially in recent years. The approach has varied depending on the situation, though the general goal is to standardise inconsistencies in legacy decisions."

Other new emojis include heart hands, a troll and a biting lip. They're expected to be rolled out late this year or in early 2022.

"Unicode 14.0 includes 838 new characters, of which 37 are brand new emoji code points," Emojipedia said.

"As of Emoji 14.0, there are now a total of 3633 emojis."
