One of the most recognisable faces in New Zealand sport, Peter Burling will bid for his third consecutive Olympic medal and second-straight gold in Tokyo.

On course to become New Zealand's greatest sailor, Burling's trophy cabinet is nothing short of incredible.

The 30-year-old heads to Tokyo after a summer that saw him retain the America's Cup with Emirates Team NZ, defending the 'Auld Mug', after winning it off Oracle Team USA in Bermuda in 2017.

But if Burling's displays as Team New Zealand helmsman are worth noting, his dominance of the 49er class make for even better reading.

He and teammate Blair Tuke have won world titles no fewer than six times from 2013-20, without competing in 2017 and 2018.

Burling and Tuke dominated the field to win 49er gold at Rio 2016 by 43 points - the biggest Olympic margin in more than 50 years - clinching the title with two races to spare.

The pair won every single 49er regatta between London 2012 and Rio 2016, and have both since taken to the America's Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race.

Burling was a flagbearer for New Zealand in 2016, and was named World Sailor of the Year in 2015 and 2017.
