The ancient Korean martial art of taekwondo made its first Olympics appearance as a demonstration sport - fittingly - at its homeland, Seoul 1988.
After another demonstration at Barcelona 1992, it became a full medal sport at Sydney 2000 and has been on the programme ever since.
Practised by about 80 million people across the world, taekwondo is one fo the world's most popular sports and will be contested across four body weights among both men and women.
Unsurprisingly, Korea has enjoyed considerable Olympic success with 12 gold and 19 medals overall, clear of nearest rival China (seven & 10), although they took out two titles each at Rio 2016.
New Zealand has contested the last four Olympic taekwondo tournaments and will again be represented by Tom Burns at Tokyo.
