Tokyo Olympics: Tennis

  • 01/01/2021

Tennis an original Modern Olympic sport at Athens, but disappeared off the programme after Paris 1924.

Returning at Seoul 1988, some of the game's greatest names have won gold medals, including Steffi Graf, Serena and Venus Williams, Andre Agassi, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray in singles, and Roger Federer in doubles.

Like golf, Olympic tennis struggles to compete with the major events on the professional tour. Only Graf (1988) has won all four Grand Slams and an Olympic singles title in the same year.

Matches will be contested in men's and women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles on hard court at Tokyo.

Marcus Daniel and Michael Venus were New Zealand's representative at Rio 2016 in men's doubles, and they return for their second Olympics.
