A US couple died suddenly holidaying in Fiji, local police have confirmed.

David and Michelle Paul, of Texas, died on Sunday (local time). Their deaths are not being treated as suspicious and illness caused their deaths, post mortem results showed.

They are survived by a 2-year-old son and a daughter from David's previous relationship, Texan news source KVUE reports. David was an Air Force veteran and the couple reportedly enjoyed travelling.

Many online have expressed their shock over the deaths, with one person writing, "Who would think something like this would happen on what you would imagine would be a dream [vacation]".

Another questioned what action a person can take if they become sick while on holiday; "How devastating for these two kiddos left behind!

"What's scary about this is if it's a virus, what can you do when you're sick around the world?"

Police are working with the Fijian Health Ministry to undertake further tests by sending samples offshore to determine the exact cause of the couple's deaths, the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reports.
