The aircraft that had people running to their windows in curiosity last Thursday made another return to Auckland sky's last night.

The Ukrainian Antonov was on another delivery mission, this time carrying the America's Cup boat belonging to Italy's Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

A slight change in the Antonov's flight path meant it approached the city out over water, whereas last week the massive aircraft flew over suburbs such as Westmere, Ponsonby, Eden Terrace, Parnell and Mission Bay at around 4000 feet.

Auckland has been visited by a number of these massive freighters over the past few weeks.

They have been used by American Magic, Ineos Team UK and Stars & Stripes Team USA to deliver their America's Cup boats to Auckland for next year's America's Cup.

Unlike last night's arrival, which went mostly unnoticed by those not on the lookout, last week the Antonov got the attention of thousands as it flew into Aotearoa.

"I heard the noise so checked the flight tracking app, saw it was an Antonov so I ran outside to see it," one plane spotter told Newshub after Thursday evening's arrival.

The Antonov remains on the ground at Auckland International Airport, with no definite time or day put on a departure at this stage.
