A US man is accused of choking a flight attendant with his own tie in an attempt to storm the cockpit on a JetBlue flight.

According to an FBI affidavit, passenger Khalil El Dahr assaulted the crew members on a flight from Boston to Puerto Rico on Wednesday (local time).

A copy of the affidavit obtained by The Daily Beast reports El Dahr attempted to make a phone call - and became "angry about the call's unsuccess".

Soon afterwards he charged the flight deck, screaming in Spanish that he wanted to be shot.

He tussled with a flight attendant who tried to corral El Dahr, kicking and choking the attendant with his own tie.

It ultimately took six or seven attendants to take El Dahr down, and they were forced to use plastic zip-tie handcuffs, seat-belt extenders and a flight attendant's tie to restrain him at the back of the plane.

The flight landed safely in San Juan where  El Dahr was arrested. He's now facing federal charges.
