A man has launched a brutal assault on the teen manager of a Sydney fast food franchise, after a heated dispute saw him leave the restaurant and return brandishing an axe.

The attack took place in the early hours of Saturday morning, and saw the 19-year-old McDonald's staffer sent to hospital to receive treatment on his injuries.

Police and ambulance services were called to the Parramatta restaurant at 12:30am, and were told that the manager had been struck in the back of the head with the weapon.

The victim is reportedly in a stable condition in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, which may be because the man who carried out the assault opted to use the blunt side of the axe.

Police are still searching for the assailant, who has been described as being Māori or Pacific Islander and of medium build.
