A mob has slaughtered almost 300 crocodiles in Indonesia in act of revenge after a man was killed by one of the reptiles.

The 48-year-old was killed after he entered a crocodile breeding farm in a residential area in Papua province, looking for grass to feed his livestock.

"One of the crocodile farm employees ... heard someone screaming for help and ran to the scene where they saw a person being mauled by a crocodile," Natural Resources Conservation Agency head Basar Manullang told AFP.

On Saturday after the man's funeral, a group of locals headed to the crocodile farm and proceeded to slaughter them with clubs, knives, machetes and shovels.

Images from the scene show piles of dead crocodiles covered in blood. The mob reportedly wanted their revenge against the crocodile breeder, who has now threatened to lay criminal charges.

World Conservation Society Indonesia manager Dwi Nugroho Adhiasto said the incident shows the danger of trespassing into a breeding farm and the need for greater safety measures.

"They have to make sure that the farm has good barriers and they need to step up security with CCTV and security signs to warn people."
