A noodle shop owner is claiming credit for a prank that saw Wall Street's famous bull statue covered in dildos and topped with a shirtless Vladimir Putin impersonator.

"NYPD just invited me into the 1st precinct on Monday to receive a summons for my work as Putin on the Wall Street Charging Bull," Jeff Jetton wrote on Twitter on Wednesday (NZ time). "I assume that's some kind of award?"

Mr Jetton donned a mask of the Russian President's visage and stuck 130 dildos to the famous statue, meant to symbolise "strength and power of the American people" according to its creator, artist Arturo Di Modica.

He then sat atop the bull, sans shirt, as onlookers snapped photos that quickly went viral on social media.

"Anybody who tells you sex toys aren't good tools of resistance has never had a bag of dicks and a little bit of ingenuity," Jeff Jetton told the Huffington Post.

Donald Trump earlier this week had a behind-closed-doors meeting with Mr Putin, whom some believe holds leverage over the US President. Mr Jetton has himself been investigating the ties between Mr Trump and Russia, using publicly available information.

"If you're good at piecing things together, why don't you just do some of this shit yourself?" he told The Daily Beast in 2017.

Mr Jetton, who founded popular eatery Toki Underground, said New York police officers were "kind of laughing" when they contacted him about the stunt.

Mr Di Modica has yet to comment on the unusual use of his most famous work.
