Elon Musk's SpaceX company has successfully launched a satellite into space, wowing residents of California in the process.

The Falcon 9 rocket - which took an Argentine satellite into orbit - launched at 7:21pm (local time) northwest of Los Angeles.

Residents, including actor Seth MacFarlane posted photos on social media of the launch, which glowed in the skies above Los Angeles.

The satellite will reportedly monitor natural disasters, crop yields and soil moisture from around 620km above the Earth's surface.
