A Chicago college student has gained notoriety on the internet after falsely claiming she supported Donald Trump and asking for money.

The student, known as Quran, started the furore by tweeting a picture of herself wearing a Make America Great Again hat and claiming she wanted to stop hiding.

"I will not hide any longer, the left has made us feel as if us black Republicans should hide!! but not anymore," she wrote.

Tweets proclaiming support for Quran started flooding in, and she began posting about her home life going downhill since the announcement.

Capitalising on the support from her new Republican fans she then tweeted out a link to a GoFundMe asking for money to pay for college after her parents stopped supporting her financially.

But Quran quickly tired of the gig and announced she was lying the whole time, in a series of tweets that called Donald Trump "racist" and a "rotting carrot".

"Trump is a racist, homophobic, transphobic, bigot AND YOU THINK MY BLACK ASS WOULD SUPPORT THAT ROTTING CARROT??" she wrote

"Ridiculous, any black person can put on that ugly ass hat and say #MAGA and y'all will instantly be up their ass cause you want to prove so hard you're not racist."

Many Republicans have slammed Quran on Twitter for her dishonesty, but she is unrepentant.

She later told New York Magazine she refunded all the money donated to the GoFundMe, which despite reports it was over$100,000, it was actually closer to $200.

She told the magazine she used the stunt to show how desperate Republicans were to appear like they're not racist.

"A lot of Republicans have this idea that everyone thinks Republicans are mostly racist and they're really desperate to get that stigma off of them. I just felt like capitalising on that," she said.

GoFundMe has now removed the initial fraudulent fundraiser and banned Quran's account.

"After the campaign was launched, it was reported to our Trust and Safety team. The campaign was reviewed and removed from the platform," a GoFundMe spokesperson told Buzzfeed.

"The platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means all donors are protected by a refund policy if misuse occurs."
