An elderly New Zealand woman has been found after spending three nights stranded in a Western Australia national park.

Patricia Byrne, 84, understood to be from Whangamata, was found on Monday in the Stirling Range National Park after last being seen on Thursday morning.

Her disappearance sparked a land and air search effort of Mount Trio, about 330km southeast of Perth.

With no food or water during the ordeal, Ms Byrne was taken to Albany Health Campus for treatment and police said her condition is still being assessed, 9 News reports.

Grandson Blair Coatsworth told 9 News his grandma's "the hardest 84-year-old you'd know".

"She would take on a gang of people, that woman, and to hear she came out the way she did was sort of what you'd expect from her."

Dozens of police and volunteers searched the area helped by tracker dogs, ABC News reports.

Ms Byrne was eventually found walking along the side of the road about 4km away from where she was last seen.

"It was a bit of a shock," said Sgt Allan Mallard, who found her.

The weather had been particularly hot in the area, with temperatures reaching 37degC on Friday.

Ms Byrne's family issued a statement thanking those involved in the search, saying: "We are very thankful of the love and support from our friends and family.

"Our family appreciate all the efforts of the police, SES [State Emergency Service] volunteers, Parks and Wildlife Service, St John Ambulance, DFES and other volunteers."
