Melbourne is expected to take over Sydney's spot as Australia's most populated city by 2026.

For the fourth year in a row, Melbourne has gained 100,000 people.

On average Melbourne will gain 327 people per day. The total population is currently sitting at 5 million, and that's set to increase.

Melbourne is Australia's fastest growing city, with the majority of its population growth attributed to overseas migration.

Immigrants comprise 65 percent of new arrivals in the city, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

If this population growth remains constant, Melbourne will hit 6 million people by 2025. Sydney will hit the same milestone at the same time.

By 2026, Melbourne will overtake Sydney. By 2037, the city will hit a whopping 8 million.
