A car went that smashed through a glass window and into a fitness centre swimming pool in the US was driven by an elderly man, who accidentally put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake.

Seattle police said a 69-year-old man ended up in the pool on Monday (local time), when he was attempting to park his vehicle outside the gym, local news source KIRO7 reports.

"I've been a lifeguard for maybe five or six years now and I've never had a car, like, fall into the pool before," witness Noah Schlenk said.

He told KIRO7 him and another person worked to get the man out of the water.

Following the incident, social media users bombarded Twitter with puns.

"He was looking to carpool," one said.

"Really going off into the deep end there," another wrote.

Police said the driver would not be charged, KIRO7 reports.
