A "disturbing" video of a Texas girl turning a dryer on after putting her dog in it has prompted a police investigation.

According to reports, the account the video was posted on has been removed. However, the footage was widely circulated and has gone viral.

It's unclear when the incident occurred, but the footage shows the girl picking up the small dog and laughing, before putting it in the dryer and starting the machine, Dallas News reports.

The Lewisville girl says in the video: "I just want him to move, that's all I wanted.

"He like that."

The Lewisville Police Department (DPD) said on Facebook it was aware of the video circulating on social media.

"DPD officers met with our investigators and provided all of the information they gathered in this case.

"Through their diligent work, DPD identified the individual involved."

The DPD says it wouldn't publicly identify the girl, as she was a minor.

Police said the investigation was still in its early stages.

"The case is being investigated as cruelty to non-livestock animals."

Many Facebook users commenting on the post were outraged.

"It's very disturbing that anyone, much less a minor would do this," one said.

"I cannot watch this video," another wrote. "It makes me sick and hurts my heart to no end that this happened and that some people are amused by this."
