The daughter of notorious Australian serial killer Ivan Milat says she is saddened by his death, despite the "whole world" being happy about it.

Known as "the backpacker murderer," Milat died of cancer at the weekend, aged 74.

Between 1989 and 1993, Milat brutally murdered seven young hitchhikers, aged between 19 and 22, who were travelling along a remote highway in New South Wales.

Following Milat's death, his daughter Lynise has opened up about her father. She told The Daily Telegraph she was "really depressed over the whole thing".

"He was my dad ... who isn't sad when they lose their dad?

"The whole world might be happy that he's gone but I'm not. I've lost my dad," Lynise told The Daily Telegraph.

Milat's victims included UK backpackers Caroline Clarke, 21, and Joanne Walters, 22, German backpacker Simone Schmidt, 21, Melbourne couple Deborah Everist, 19, and James Gibson, 19, and German couple Gabor Neugebauer, 21, and Anja Habschied, 20.

The former road worker was arrested in 1994 after an extensive police investigation. The bodies of Milat's victims were discovered partially buried in shallow graves in the Belanglo State Forest.

The horrific killings inspired the hit 2005 Australian horror film Wolf Creek.
