First Darren Donaghey bagged himself a beautiful wife. Then he went and won himself £1 million (NZ$2 million) with a scratchie.

Now, the man dubbed "Britain's luckiest man" has moved his family - including his two autistic children - into their dream home.

Donaghey says he and his wife Kate's "biggest wish" has always been to have a home with enough room to properly provide for their children, who need care 24/7.

After striking it lucky in the lottery, the family have now sold their ex-council home and used the prize money to buy a bigger, better house in Newcastle.

Donaghey first came to national attention in the UK in 2014 after winning a local radio station's "Punching Above Your Weight" competition, a title he won for having a wife deemed to be out of his league.

After his good fortune marrying such a looker, lady luck smiled on him once again when a few years later when he popped out to buy a pint of milk.

Not only did he get the milk, but he also picked up a scratchie, a decision that paid off dividends.

"I am probably the luckiest man in the world," Donaghey told the Daily Mail after he found out he had won the £1 million.

After the win, the 33-year-old quit his job at a call centre. And though the couple splashed out on a new house, they say they were careful not to fritter the winnings away.

"Apart from the house, we’ve not really treated ourselves," Kate told Metro.

"We wanted to look after our family and friends. That’s the best feeling. But we knew we had to make long-term plans for the children.

"We got financial advice, and knew we had to be careful. They may not be independent, so they’ll have to be supported."
