Shocking footage shows out-of-control truck plough into Florida airport, send fearful employees diving

Shocking video footage captures the moment an out-of-control truck ploughed into an airport terminal in the US, sending debris flying and employees ducking for cover.

On Thursday night (NZ Time), a white pick-up truck drove into the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport in Florida, smashing into the baggage carousel area and counter.

Footage shows employees look up in horror before diving behind the concrete counter which stops the truck's destructive path. Neither were hurt.

As it was early in the morning in Florida, there were few people in the terminal.

One large carousel was damaged, with an estimated cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Many made light of the crash on Facebook, praising whoever built the concrete counter which halted the truck.

"Whoever built this wall. I'd like to hire them to build my house," they said.

"That Uber driver is getting a 5 rating for getting their passenger to the airport on time," said another.

"He was just trying to return the rental on time before they charged him another day."

"When you trying to beat the Holiday rush."

According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, a 40-year man, Juan Monsivis, was arrested following the incident. He suffered serious injuries and is recovering in hospital. It's unknown whether he was wearing a seatbelt at the time.

It's believed the man suffered a medical event before crashing into the building.

However, authorities say Monsivis had been seen earlier driving recklessly. Attempts to stop him had been unsuccessful. He also has a range of previous traffic offences, including driving under the influence.

Flights weren't impacted by the event and the debris was cleaned up within a few hours.
