Having twins born in different decades sounds like something to file in the 'too strange to be true' box.

But that's exactly what happened in the United States recently.

After going into labour, Dawn Gilliam gave birth to daughter Joslyn first, before younger brother Jaxon came into the world 30 minutes later.

Due to a stroke of uncanny timing, however, that 30 minutes meant the twins were born in different decades.

Gilliam told ABC News that Joslyn was born at 11:37pm on December 31, 2019, while Jaxon was born just after midnight on January 1, 2020.

"We're still in shock," Gilliam said.

The birth came as an even greater surprise as they were not due for another seven weeks.

Joslyn weighed 4 pounds 11 ounces, while Jaxon came in at 4 pounds and 4 ounces.

"We were surprised how big they were," Gilliam said. "We joked about it before knowing that we were in labour."

In 2019, twin girls born in German set a world record for their unusual timing.

They too were born in different years, but rather than having a mere 30 minutes between them they were born an incredible three months' apart.

In that case, one twin was born prematurely at just 26 weeks. After the first birth, the children's mother's cervix closed, with the unborn twin remaining in the womb for another 97 days.
